Thinking about buying an electric vehicle, but not sure if your home’s wiring can handle a fast charger? You’re not alone!
Last week, our team was in Grantham helping a customer prepare for the arrival of their new EV. Here is a quick look at what the job involved and why a quick electrical check beforehand is so important.
The Challenge
The customer wanted a 7kW smart home charger installed on their driveway for fast overnight charging. However, during our initial site assessment, we spotted an issue: the home’s main consumer unit (fuse box) was an older model without modern RCD safety protection.
Plugging a high-power EV charger into an outdated board isn’t just inefficient—it can be a serious fire and shock hazard.
The Solution
Before fitting the charger, we upgraded the customer’s fuse box to a modern metal consumer unit equipped with Surge Protection Devices (SPD) and Type A RCDs.
Once the board was fully safe and up to current regulations, we installed the sleek wall charger right next to the driveway, hiding all cables neatly along the brickwork.
What we completed in a single day:
- Upgraded the old fuse box to a modern, fully compliant unit.
- Installed a 7kW smart EV charger with smartphone app control.
- Conducted full safety testing and issued an Electrical Installation Certificate.
The Result
Our customer can now charge their car from 0% to 100% overnight using cheap off-peak electricity tariffs—saving hundreds of pounds a year compared to petrol.
